Paradise Lost

is “self-begot, self-raised,” and “Must we renounce, and, changing style, be called / Princes of Hell?” (Milton II. 313).

Protestant thinkers felt the power of princes was from God, but Milton believed the power of the king was only a power entrusted in him via the people. Therefore, he pushes Protestant thinking further by asserting that the people have this right not princes and magistrates alone. Of course, by making the reference to God as king Milton is endangering the authority of God, an authority which Satan believes he has a Protestant-like right to challenge. However, Milton explains that free will is given to man from God in order to prove love, honor, and integrity.
