This article by Gunther Luschen describes sport as sociology. Sport, according to Gunther (315) allows children to adopt a role in relation to the team which is viewed as a generalized other. This dynamic exemplifies the socialization process whereby the needs of the individual in conflict with the group must be resolved for true socialization to occur “Georg Simmel exemplified sociation through play and saw sport as struggle displaying the unifying elements in conflict” (Luschen 315).

Luschen also argues that sports and physical education are a perfect study for sociology because the institution of athletics also extends into other areas like economics, education, and the mass media.
