Erikson viewed each stage as having the potential to impact development in a positive or negative manner, depending on the individual’s capacity to successfully resolve the above crises. Piaget’s cognitive development theory is based upon the assertion that mental growth is basically an increased ability to adapt to new situations. From the beginning of life, the individual takes a controlling hand in obtaining and organizing his or her experiences of the outside world. This process of adaptation includes “assimilation and accommodation” according to Piaget (Dacey et al. 2002, 33).

Piaget’s stages of cognitive development include four stages that span from birth until adolescence. These stages are: Sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational.
