You should begin this assignment as soon as you read the description below!1. Select one of the authors or poets we've read this semester and write a 5-7 page essay in which you demonstrate how the poem or short story we read is indicative of, or exemplifies, that writer's work. Obviously, you will need to read other short stories or poems by the writer you select as well as material from scholars and critics. 2. Write a 5 to 7 page essay in which you examine the critical response to an author or poet of your choice, one whose work we have read for the course. This paper is a "survey" of "what the critics had to say back in 19___ (whenever your author lived and published ______ (fill in name of book) ) . Obviously, some authors will work better for this assignment than others. You should consult with me on your choice. 3. Write a 5-7 page essay in which you compare/contrast two poems, stories or essays from the Abcarian text. You should select one assigned poem, story, or essay and one of your own chosing. Your comparison might focus on one author's approach to a particular theme vs. another's; one author's depiction of (fill in the blank) vs. the others. There are many posibilities here. Your comparison should draw on appropriate outside sources. No matter which assignment you choose, you MUST USE OUTSIDE SOURCES TO SUPPORT/SUBSTANTIATE YOUR ARGUMENT. hinson said. grinning, "Wouldn't have me leave m'dishes in the sink, now, would you. Joe?," and soft laughter ran through the crowd as the people stirred back into position after Mrs. Hutchinson's arrival.
"Well, now." Mr. Summers said soberly, "guess we better get started, get this over with, so's we can go back to work. Anybody ain't here?"
"Dunbar." several people said. "Dunbar. Dunbar."
Mr. Summers consulted his list. "Clyde Dunbar." he said. "That's right. He's broke his leg, hasn't he? Who's drawing for him?"
"Me. I guess," a woman said. and Mr. Summers turned to look at her. "Wife draws for her husband." Mr. Summers said. "Don't you have a grown boy to do it for you, Janey?" Although Mr. Summers and everyone else in the village knew the answer perfectly well, it was the business of the official of the lottery to ask such questions formally. Mr. Summers waited with an expression of polite interest while Mrs. Dunbar answered.
"Horace's not but sixteen vet." Mrs. Dunbar said regretfully. "Guess I gotta fill in for the old man this year."
"Right." Sr. Summers said. He made a note on the list he was holding. Then he asked, "Watson boy drawing this year?"
