Revolution

The movement was inspired by those who refused to accept enforced Catholicism, which James has tried to impose on all of England. Of course, the reason James was determined to convert the entire populace to Catholicism was because of the concept of Divine Right, by which a King was empowered allegedly by God. While few in England were opposed to the Revolution, James II had many supporters in Scotland and Ireland. While James won a few major battles of the conflict, he was defeated at the battle of Boyne in Ireland in 1690 (The Civil War 1).

One of the most important documents employed during the Revolution was the Declaration of Right. This document was accepted by William of Orange and Mary. It established the basic principles of the English constitution. Most important among its mandates were those that diminished the power of the Crown, whereby the King could not raise taxes without the consent of Parliament.
