The segregation that would take firm root in the South was reinforced by violent hate groups like the Klu Klux Klan and the segregation of blacks into different locations than whites made it easier to target black neighborhoods and reinforce the lack of opportunity. However, the Supreme Court continued to federally sanction segregation with a series of decisions that allowed the South to continue its abuse toward blacks. Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896 represents a Supreme Court decision that “supported the constitutionality of a Louisiana law requiring separate but equal facilities for whites and blacks in railroad cars” (The African 3).
