There are numerous other reasons that make such a study critical to understanding the issue of spousal abuse. One of these is the reluctance of women to leave their abusive husbands, either from fear, child custody, or economic reasons. It is a proven fact that a women increase their chances of being murdered by 75% by leaving abusive husbands (Spousal 3). Another reason is the mitigating factors like poverty, lack of education and substance abuse. Among all batterers, 30% to 60% abuse substances (Kircher 87)
