e of the lottery and the official ritual of carrying it out have taken the morality out of the community and desensitized its inhabitants to their fellow brothers and sisters. The town is the type where the men can only talk about the hard labor of running their farms. Everyone appears normal and very hard working “speaking of planting and rain, tractors and taxes” (Jackson 2). This suggests they are so busy working to survive and put food in the mouths of their families that they have little time for intellectual or spiritual pursuits. In addition to this, the person who orchestrates the lottery, as well as the other community events, is the only one who has the time and energy to do so because he has no children and runs a coal business “Mr. Summers, who had the time and energy to devote to civic activities” (Jackson 2).

Jackson was preoccupied with another theme that we see prevalent in The Lottery. She explores the aspect of what happens to the individual because of society? We see that little Davy Hutchinson does not know what to do with his stone.
