When a melanoma occurs, it can grow in either a radial or horizontal direction. Radial, or horizontal, melanomas grow on the outside of the skin and may rest there for years. However, if they are left untreated or go undetected they will begin a rapid vertical growth. When they start to grow vertically they invade the dermis and then the blood stream and lymph system. From there they enter other organs, thus, early detection is one of the best forms of prevention and raises the chances for curing melanoma.
