The software was designed as an add-on module for Per-Se’s Patient1 computer-based patient record. The new software revolutionizes traditional methods of patient records administration “Media Manager enables a patient’s medical and historical information that would normally be part of a hospital’s ‘paper chart’ – from the patient’s photo, insurance card and driver’s license to digital files, like X-rays, EKG, ECG strips and MRIs – to be quickly embedded in the appropriate place within the computer-based patient record” (Per-Se 1).

New technologies like this have great advantages over old methods of administrating patient chart information. To begin with, never before technology were health care providers able to have instant access to all information pertaining to a patient, from X-rays to Social Security number, and never before technology were they able to access it from just about anywhere with the right personal computer and software. In the old days, having access to such information might have consumed half a day or more until a physician obtained the patient’s paper chart, got a copy of their medical history files, and then studied their X-rays or other test results in a special lab. Thus, this kind of technology greatly increases efficiency, allowing the physician or health care provider to offer more personalized service to the patient. Further, these kinds of software eliminate many of the clerical tasks involve in storage and retrieval of information which allows for payroll reduction. So promising is this kind of technology that many health care providers are adopting it at a dizzying pace.
