The work of Pavlov’s classical conditioning theory was significant enough for him to be awarded the Nobel prize. Classical conditioning is now routinely used by behaviorists to explain learning, i.e., a change in behavior as the result of an experience. Learning is perceived as a complex series of stimulus-response connections. When it comes to human behavior and tantrums, there is another concept within classical conditioning known as extinction. Extinction works like the example of Pavlov’s dogs but in reverse. Instead of gradually learning a conditioned response, extinction is a process of gradually unlearning one, “A conditioned stimulus effect will not last very long unless it is repeatedly accompanied by an unconditional stimulus.
