Transference

Conrad to revisit the final moments of the accident and his brother’s life. Slowly but steadily, Hutton’s character starts to treat the analyst like his brother. By the end of the session, Conrad screams at Dr. Berger as if he were screaming at his brother: “Why did you let go?” (Redford 1980). Once he has experienced this transference, Conrad is able to resolve his feelings of blame and guilt.

There are a variety of forms that transference may take. Transference is often seen in victims of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, when triggers in the here-and-now emit feelings and attitudes evoked by the trauma in the past to come to the fore. Transference is able to take a variety of forms based on the fact that different kinds of patient problems will manifest different kinds of transference. The following list is not conclusive but adequately demonstrates how different types of disorders or “types” will manifest transference in the therapeutic setting:
