During adolescence, at 17, Disney experienced events that affected his personality and identity formation to a great degree. He worked for the Red Cross in Europe and left behind the girl he was to marry. While in the service of the Red Cross, he was given a birthday celebration by his friends in his unit and left with an enormous food and drink tab courtesy of the same friends. He formed a close alliance with one friend named Russell and they both had dogs. The dog named Carey was the recipient of all the love and affection the young Disney possessed and was unable to satisfy with his family or girl who was back in the states. Russell got to transfer home and, since Walt could not take his dog with him, Russell took responsibility for him until Walt would come back home.
