The Hospital continues to recognize the need for a health and wellness center available to staff as well as the general public. Health and wellness centers and their affiliated services have demonstrated a positive impact on the health of individuals utilizing them. However, they also demonstrate a positive impact on the bottom line because of lowering healthcare costs and enabling higher levels of productivity from staff who miss less days of work due to illnesses “demand management programs aimed at reducing the need for costly healthcare have been partly responsible for slowing down increases in health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs” (Appleson, 1996, 1).

A needs assessment is valuable for developing a health and wellness center because it not only demonstrates need, but it also provides information which helps those responsible for its creation tailor programs and services that most aid individual health issues as well as the company’s bottom line. For example, a review of worker’s compensation and medical costs allow for risk-factors to be determined “Once companies have examined their medical and worker’s comp claims to determine where they are spending their healthcare dollars, then they need to develop specific programs to educate and modify behaviors that will impact those areas” (Mason, 1994, 29).

A strong trend in health and wellness centers has pervaded corporate America. As one health professional claims, wellness centers and programs exist in approximately two-thirds of the nation’s worksites employing 50 or more employees (Fisher and Fisher, 1995, 81). A survey was developed to assess the need for a health and wellness center at affiliated with the hospital but open to the general public.
