Floyd touches it. As they lineup for a picture, sun hits the monolith and it gives off an ear-piercing sound. The signal is coming from Jupiter.

On the spaceship Discovery, on its journey to Jupiter. Astronauts are asleep in pods.

In the passenger area an astronaut jogs.

Astronauts watch BBC news. Some of them eat.

The real “leader” of the spaceship, a human-like computer named HAL is discussed.

Hal is interviewed on the BBC news program.

Shots of the basically bored astronauts sunbathing, getting delayed messages from home, and a chess game between Frank and HAL.

HAL and David discuss David’s charcoal sketches.

HAL monitors all parts of the ship and has a conversation with Dave about the mission.

HAL detects a fault in the AE35 unit.

Bowman leaves the spaceship in a pod.

Bowman again leaves the pod and replaces a unit.

He returns to run tests on the unit.

He tells HAL there is no problem with the unit.

Transmission from earth headquarters verifies there is no fault with the AE35.

Dave and Frank talk about HAL’s potential error while HAL lip-reads their conversation.

Bowman orders a man to leave in a pot to reinstall the unit he replaced.

HAL and Dave argue and Dave leaves in a pod to rescue Poole.

Dave orders HAL to let him renter the ship.

Dave must use the air-lock entrance to get back inside.

Dave goes to the ‘brain room’ where HAL’s programs are controlled.

HAL and Dave converse as HAL is disconnected by Dave.

As HAL deteriorates he sings a song.

A taped message plays the final words of dialogue in the film as the real reason for the mission is revealed to Dave.

Dave finishes his flight to Jupiter.
