Heinrich Himmler was the head of the German SS. Throughout the 1930s, he increased his control over and the power of the German state police system that included the Gestapo (State Secret Police), Kripo (Criminal Police), and Orpo (Order Police). Himmler appointed a Hohere SS und Polizeifuhrer (HSSPF) to each German military district to oversee all German SS organizations in the area.
