Extremely poor, Bangladesh suffers from 35.6% of its people existing under the poverty line, 5.8% inflation, and a staggering unemployment rate of 35.2% (CIA). Adding to these problems is the fact that annual floods hamper economic development and growth. Unlike many countries in a similar predicament, Bangladesh does enjoy 73% arable land availability, but the monsoon floods hamper agrarian development. Further, the birth rate is 25.3/1000 with total fertility at 2.78/woman (CIA). These factors demonstrate that increasing Bangladesh’s population will only serve to further its economic woes, deplete its resources, and lower its already low quality of life for inhabitants.
