Sophocles' Oedipus and Shakespeare's Hamlet

d and never speak, / From this day on, to me or any Theban. / You are the sinner who pollutes our land" (p. 325). Blinded by his overwhelming pride, Oedipus derides Tiresias. "Truth can save any- one excepting you, / You with no eyes, no hearing, and no brains!" (p. 325). Ironically, it is Oedipus who cannot be saved by the truth.

As Oedipus drives for the truth and the mystery of his birth slowly unravels, Oedipus becomes more and more a man possessed, a man psychologically haunted. Creon tells Oedipus: "You go beyond all bounds when you are angry, / And are sullen when you yield. Natures like yours / Inflict their heaviest torments on themselves" (p. 332).
