H1: Subjects who take part in the EAP program will report fewer trouble signs than subjects who do not take part in the EAP program.

This project will be designed to evaluate research previously conducted on the EAP. Research that has been conducted on the program has resulted in positive conclusions on its effectiveness in reducing drug and alcohol abuse. Positive results have also been found on its effectiveness to reduce distress and increase work performance.

The purpose of an EAP is to improve the psychological health of employees. It is designed to help company workers develop coping skills and accept a greater degree of personal responsibility. It is also designed to help them resolve their individual, marital, family and job performance problems. As a result, their productivity and attendance will improve (Drotos, 1999).

Drotos stated that research conducted by the federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention on the EAP showed illegal drug use was reduced by 50 percent and alcohol abuse declined by more than two-thirds 5 to 16 months after the patients received treatment. The study also revealed that, after the substance abusers received treatment, there was a decrease in job related injuries from 9 to 5 percent. There were additional decreases for tardiness (from 39 to 7 percent) and for absenteeism (from 42 to 5 percent). Finally, job errors declined from 32 to 6 percent.
