However, it was not the Moslem Brotherhood that took power from the British and the monarchy, but rather an organization known as the Free Officers. This organization was led by General Mohammed Naquib. The Free Officers established Egypt as a republic, with Naquib as its first President. In 1954, Naquib was suddenly removed from power, and the country's Premier, Gamal Abdel Nasser was named as President. In that same year, the Anglo-Egyptian treaty called for the removal of all British personnel from Egypt, with the exception of the region of the Suez Canal.

Although the Moslem Brotherhood had assisted in the Free Officers' take-over of Egypt, Nasser's government soon came to be opposed to the terrorist group. For example, Nasser did not agree with the Brotherhood's demand for the establishment of an Islamic government and society in Egypt. I
