Shin (40-41) identified five traits, or characteristics, considered to be most important among CEOs in successful firms. These five desirable traits were as follows: (1) respect for an organization's employees; (2) an initiator attitude; (3) a strong focus on the attainment of objectives; (4) an ability to build networks; and (5) demanding the highest level of competency, including the effective use of technology.

Shin (44) also identified five traits that tend to be found among CEOs in unsuccessful firms. These five undesirable traits were as follows: (1) avoiding decision-making; (2) poor treatment of a firm's human resources; (3) an inability to build networks; (4) an inability to respond effectively to changes in a firm's external environment; and (5) a failure to demand competency, including the use of technology.
