The most commonly cited developmental process theory is the filter theory of mate selection (Hoffman "Filter Theory of Mate Selection). According to this theoretical model, individuals select their mates by filtering out prospective partners based on the following criteria:

"Propinquity": Individuals tend to find their mates within the same geographical areas or with whom they have frequent contact ("Cohabitation and Mate Selection"; Hoffman "Filter Theory of Mate Selection").

"Homogamy": Individuals are more likely to choose mates who are similar to themselves in terms of their socioeconomic status; cultural backgrounds; and level of education that in turns determines preferences, lifestyles and values. With re
