Differentiation: This mechanism refers to the ability to identify the stimuli that were once considered to be indistinguishable (Goldstone, 1998). In their study, Lively, Logan and Pisoni (1993) found that Japanese speakers were able to be trained to discriminate between the phonemes /r/ and /l/, which do not exist in the Japanese language. The training process involved exposing the Japanese words to many different words containing the phonemes spoken by a wide variety of speakers and providing them with immediate feedback for their accurate identification of the words.
