rmance.

Employee diversity in ethnicity, race, and gender is becoming the norm as opposed to the exception in American health care organizations (Muller & Hasse, 1994). The rationale for nursing leaders to actively manage the differences inherent in a pluralistic workforce is based in the concept of multiculturalism (Grossman & Taylor, 1995). To effectively manage diversity, nurse leaders must be aware of the values and biases of their conventional management approaches, and must be willing to use employee-focused strategies that affirm people's differences while maintaining high-quality care.

Effective diversity management is an institutional, and therefore, nursing leadership responsibility (Hayes, 1992).
