Developing the Philosophy For Pursuing the Objectives in Nursing Practice

The growing diversity in the structure of the American population, an increase in the incidence of both incurable and highly communicable diseases among this population, and an evolving social milieu that to some people causes the unthinkable to be considered creates moral, ethical, and practical dilemmas for many in the nursing profession. Some nurses question the requirement that they provide treatment for patients who do not comply with treatment regimens. Other nurses question a requirement for them to deliver care to inner city populations where the incidence of such diseases as tuberculosis and AIDS (acquired immunity deficiency syndrome) is the highest. Questions such as these just mentioned lead to the issue of providing care for immigrants present in the United States. It is not only that higher probabilities of AIDS and tuberculosis infection attached to some immigrant population groups that causes some nurses to question the requirement to provide care for such individuals. Some nurses also object to the delivery of such care within the context that the delivery of such care restricts the availability of care for the domestic indigent. Other nurses appraise these conditions differently and support the delivery of care to such individuals.
