ny human resource managers may not maintain a clear picture of an employee's performance because they are only bearing witness to the behavior that the individual chooses to display in the presence of the supervisor who is evaluating them. This could ultimately lead to an unclear performance review. It has been theorized that many individuals perform above their normal levels when in the presence of a superior; this is the old standard of looking good in front of the boss. However, the employee may perform his or her duties in an entirely different manner when they are not being physically supervised (i.e. watched), as is the case during most of time that the individual spends performing their assigned tasks.

This instance of performing a great deal of one's job without supervision can have a reverse affect, which can be to the employee's disadvantage too.
