ho had formerly been a man of science, fell in love with a beautiful young woman and decided to leave science for a while to study the nature of love. Because Aylmer is a man of philosophy and science who has pursued perfection and married beauty, he is bothered by Georgiana's "fairy hand" on her cheek (Hawthorne, 1966, p. 85). Like his experiments in his laboratory, he can't let this alone, and thinks he can "fix" it. Because Aylmer is obsessed by it, so is Georgiana, who begins to hate herself for having such a mark on her cheek, whereas before she thought nothing of it. She begs him to take the mark from her cheek or take her life. Eventually Aylmer does achieve "perfection" and is able to rid his wife of her birthmark, but only at the cost of her life.
