The primary responsibility of a professional nurse is safe, quality care for the patient, and to do this nurses should participate in workplace decisions affecting nursing care; acquire the resources to perform their duties effectively; safeguard the standards set for the profession; and protect employment rights, terms and conditions of employment to attract and retain qualified personnel. The ANA considers that collective bargaining is professional because it allows nurses to uphold these standards of the profession.
