The Status of Women in the Academy

on hiring 'rising young scholars' which may inadvertently exclude women because it suggests a stereotype of those who have been successful in the past, which is skewed in favor of males (Wilson, 2004). Because of the clash of family responsibilities with careers for women, women's research careers tend to peak later than those of men, so they are overlooked. The president, Lawrence H. Summers, admitted that last year, departments proposed male candidates, and so male candidates were hired, and that in future, there needs to be more monitoring of faculty searches.

Women engineers and scientists seem to have a harder time balancing career and family responsibilities than their male counterparts (Gill, 2005). Thirty-four percent of women scientists and engineers are unmarried compared to 17 percent of men. Twenty-one percent of women scientists and engineers identified balancing family responsibilities as a career obstacle, but only 2.8 percent of men experienced the same problem.
