cancer. This is one of a kind of gene known as an amplified gene in which many copies of the gene are found in cancer cells. The gene, called AIBI is on the long arm of chromosome 20. The gene is of a type known as steroid-receptor coactivator (SRC-1) genes, which interact with genes for steroid hormone receptors, and the result is enhanced tumor growth.

Researchers have also identified two genes they think may control the development of inflammatory breast cancer, which is often lethal (Genetic links, 1999). It is a rare kind of breast cancer, occurring in only six percent of the 180,000 women who are found to have breast cancer each year, but those who have the gene have the least chance of survival. This type of breast cancer is random and is not inherited, and is not usually diagnosed until it is in an advanced stage. Researchers found that in these patients, loss of LIBC, a tumor suppressor gene, and overexpression of RhoC, another breast cancer related gene, occur together in 91 percent of cases. Th
