The gene is of a type known as steroid-receptor coactivator (SRC-1) genes, which interact with genes for steroid hormone receptors, and the result is enhanced tumor growth.
Researchers have also identified two genes they think may control the development of inflammatory breast cancer, which is often lethal (Genetic links, 1999). It is a rare kind of breast cancer, occurring in only six percent of the 180,000 women who are found to have breast cancer each year, but those who have the gene have the least chance of survival.
