In their article, Betz and Fitzgerald discussed the recent shifts in counseling psychology that involved the increasing recognition of the social context in influencing the lives of the individual. By focusing on the effects of society on men, women, minorities and gays, Betz and Fitzgerald illuminated the inadequacies of the past emphasis on the psychology of individual differences. This focus has provided the justification for the disenfranchisement of oppressed groups by highlighting the deficits of the individuals in these groups, without taking into account larger social influences.

Birdsall, Bobbie A. and Miller, Lynn D. "Brief Counseling in the Schools: A Solution-Focused Approach for School Counselors." Counseling and Human Development 35.2 (2002): 1-10.

In their article, Birdsall and Miller explained the appropriateness of solution focused brief counseling for the school setting. Apart from presenting the key principles of this approach, these authors provided suggestions for how school counselors can implement this approach in a comprehensive school-based model.
