In a nurturing environment, infants begin to feel increasingly secure in the world. On the most basic level, the infants need to know that they can count on their primary caretakers to respond to their cries. They feel happy when they are hugged and given a smile. These are the fundamental aspects of facilitating attachment in infants ("Adoption," 1990, p. 1). Instead of letting the baby "cry it out," parents should be aware of the specific needs of the baby and figure out the baby's special cues and routines. By doing so, the caretakers and the baby will form a special connection quickly (Granju, 1999).

Another method of facilitating attachment in infants is to sleep with or near the baby. By sleeping together, both the parents and the babies can enjoy a good night's sleep and further increase family intimacy.
