This architecture was different from earlier attempts at distributed processing that relied on intelligent PC, Mac, or UNIX-based, desktop workstations. More simply stated, application client/server referred to application processing which was split between a client and a single server (Forrester Research, 1991).
The Gartner Group, another prestigious consultancy to the information technology industry, took their swing at developing a definition. For them, the term meant the splitting of an application into tasks that are performed on separate computers, one of which was to be a "programmable" workstation such as a PC. More specifically, they had intended for the term to bring to mind a PC on a local area network (LAN) that was linked to one or more servers that were in turn linked to mainframe resource (Gartner Group, 1992).
