On or about 1996-1997 human right activists and groups such as Oxfam International discovered that Nike Corporation (Nike) -- namely its subcontractors -- was engaged in labor and human right violation in their factories in Vietnam, Indonesia, and several other countries around the world. These violations were listed as, but not limited to, mental abuse of workers, sexual abuse of workers, and forced overtime. These violations prompted the human right groups to conduct their own investigation to verify the validity of the information. After the information was verified, these groups started a series of campaign, which included letter writing to Nike to stop the mentioned abuses and human right violations.

Nike, in response, hired Andrew Young, former ambassador to the United Nations, to conduct an "independent investigation" it see if its subcontractors were indeed in violation of any human and labor rights. Mr. Young issued a favorable report that there was no evidence of "abuse"
