I. The Nervous System

c trees significantly increase the surface area of the neuron receptor surface. Many neuron types can be identified by the extent and shape of their dendritic trees. There is no sharp distinction between the contents of the neuron cell body and the contents of the dendrites. Although the Golgi apparatus tends to remain close to the nucleus in the cell body, the other organelles such as free ribosomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum extend into the dendrites, especially at their base.

Unlike the dendrites, of which there are many for each neuron cell body, each neuron has only one axon (Ross, Romrell and Kaye, 1995, 259). Axons can be very long, while dendrites are relatively short. An axon arising from a neuron in the motor nuclei of the CNS (Golgi type 1 neurons) may be more than a meter long, and have to travel that far before it reaches its effector targets in skeletal muscles. However, interneurons in the CNS have much shorter axons, such as the interneurons of the CNS known as Golgi type II neurons. Axons may give rise t
