Also, predominant in the tale is the element of contrast. There is contrast between the civilized lives of the two Munro sisters and the lives of Uncas and Chingachgook; but even more important is the contrast between violence and serenity exemplified in the characters of the scout and his two Mohican friends. The way these individuals react to a change in situation or environment is drastic. At one moment, Hawkeye, Chingachgook, and Uncas might be enjoying the calm tranquility of the "savage" forest, and, a short while later, all three could be killing, shooting, or scalping members of the enemy tribe.
