in, an individual's personality, or the theme of pursuit, capture and escape. In most cases, this reappearance of ideas is important because, in this way, Cooper is able to stress the points that are important to him, and essential to the story.
Also, predominant in the tale is the element of contrast. There is contrast between the civilized lives of the two Munro sisters and the lives of Uncas and Chingachgook; but even more important is the contrast between violence and serenity exemplified in the characters of the scout and his two Mohican friends. The way these individuals react to a change in situation or environment is drastic. At one moment, Hawkeye, Chingachgook, and Uncas might be enjoying the calm tranquility of the "savage" forest, and, a short while later, all three could be killing, shooting, or scalping members of the enemy tribe.
