As one of the most important initiators of the Reformation, Martin Luther inspired a revolt that was both political and theological. In many ways, the Reformation represented a rebellion of less powerful nations against the intellectual control of Italy and a denial of the authority of the Pope. Concerning St. Ignatius Loyola and the Counter-Reformation, the power of the Pope was not questioned; however, there was a revolt against the intellectual and moral freedom of Renaissance Italy.
