A number of general conditions tend to be present in situations in which parents are likely to become abusive. These include the following:

The parent was physically, sexually or emotionally abused or neglected as a child

The individual became a parent while still a teenager

The parent or caregiver is a substance abuser

There is a lack of parenting skills and/or knowledge of child development

Either the parent/caregiver or the child has a physical or mental illness The family is under economic stress

There is at least one child under the age of five; abuse is even more likely if the child is under the age of one year or if there are a number of very young children in the household

The child and caregiver have not bonded

The caregiver is geographically isolated an
