We should perhaps here define the term "mainstreaming", which has been replaced by many educators with the term "inclusive". Under either name, the practice entails including children who have physical, mental, or developmental disabilities in general education (or "regular") classrooms.

By definition mainstreaming is the practice of educating disabled students in the general classroom. Inclusion on the other hand is a newer term used by special education officials that describes the placement of students in regular classes for all or nearly all of the school day.
