Fitzgerald, F. Scott. Babylon Revisited

Fitzgerald, F. Scott. Babylon Revisited.

This is the story of a man who goes back to Paris to reclaim his 9-year-old daughter who is currently living with his sister-in-law and her husband. The girl's mother is dead. The father, Charles, had been a playboy and heavy drinker, and was in a sanitarium recovering from alcoholism at the time of his wife's death, for which the sister-in-law blames him. He has now been sober for three years, intends to stay that way, and wants his daughter back so she can get to know him before she is fully grown. He finds Paris changed, and empty of most of his old friends.

His sister-in-law is skeptical, but relents when her husband sides with Charles, and arrangements are made for him to take the girl to his home in Prague as soon as he can find a nursemaid. Although he has kept his whereabouts a secret from his old acquaintances, not wanting anything to spoil his chances of regaining his daughter, at dinner with his sister-in-law one night, two of Charles' friends, heavily under the influence, arrive at the home to invite him to dinner. The sister-in-law, whose health is delicate, is so shocked by their appearance, that she goes back on her agreement, and her husband calls the next day to say it would be better to wait another six months before Charles reclaims his daughter. With steely resolve, Charles goes along with her request, determined to get his daughter back, whatever it takes.
