EXISTENTIAL PHILOSOPHY AND PSYCHOPATHOLOGY

is no such thing. His work was a complete rejection of ideology and determinism coupled with the assertion that "existence precedes essence." In other words, Man is, at birth, a being for whom nothing is determined. He is a being who creates the story that becomes his life.

According to Gendlin (1997), Sartre's philosophy of existentialism (like most existential frameworks) had four basic themes. The first is "moral individualism" which holds that the highest good for any individual is to find his or her own unique vocation in life. Moral individualism states that one must choose one's own way in life without the aid of universal, objective standards because no objective, rational basis can be found for moral decisions.

The second theme is subjectivity. According to Gendlin (1997), all existential philosophers, including Sartre propose a perspective in which personal experience and acting on one's own convictions are said to be the way to arrive at truth. In other words, it is the perspective of the individual that needs to be emphasized as the most important questions in life are not accessible to reason or science.

The third theme in existential philosophy revolves around choice and commitment. Gendlin (1997) notes that all existentialists argue that humanity's primary distinction is the freedom to choose. It is choice that is said to be central to human existence, and inescapable. However, freedom of choice is said to entail commitment and responsibility. Individuals are called upon to accept the risk and responsibility of their choices.

The final theme is that of dread and anxiety. Fear and feelings of apprehension or dread are said to be part of the human experience. Anxiety is said to result from an individual's confrontation with the impossibility of finding ultimate justification for the choices made. This fact has to be recognized and acknowledged along with the feelings of fear and dread that it produces.
