Gang Prevention

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The gang prevention workshop is designed to assist youth in understanding the many issues involved in avoiding this type of peer support. The workshop will identify issues related to the following: how to avoid gang membership, what to do to exit gang membership, how to help others leave gangs, violence tendencies, anger management, how to tolerate violent conditions, school transfers, community support, and peer support groups.

These topics will help youths understand what they need and how to get it so that they are able to avoid or leave gangs. The workshop will be particularly helpful for those youths who consider themselves unable or unlikely to leave existing gangs or deal effectively with gang issues such as pressure to join, and existing violence and delinquency. For example, minority youths with low SES may live in poverty areas with violence and gangs, and schools with high numbers of minority students may have problems on campus. This workshop will help these youths understand how to overcome these problems and participate in alternative life styles with ongoing peer and community support.

The college workshop is designed to assist youth in understanding the many issues involved in pursuing a college education. The workshop will identify issues related to the following: college preparation, barriers to college education, college enrollment factors (financial and academic), transition processes from high school t
