Hitler's Final Days

Nazi Germany was ruled under the totalitarian leadership of Adolph Hitler between 1933 and 1945. His chief aim was to acquire an empire for purely German people through his mighty military machine. It was the goals and desires of this one man, Hitler, which led Germany to become involved in a two-front war, inevitably leading to the fall of Hitler's Third Reich and his suicide. The events occurring on Hitler's last day of life, April 30, 1945, were discussed in the books The Last Days of Hitler: Legend, Evidence and Truth and Nazi Germany: A New History. These sources tell two different accounts of Hitler's final day of tension, turmoil, and utter apathy.

The book, The Last Days of Hitler, thoroughly discussed Hitler's state of mind, actions, and his interaction with friends and confidants on his last day alive. This book cited Hitler's associates and friend's diaries, journals, speeches, interviews, letters, and testimonials. Additionally, there was a solid historical basis captured from books, magazines, journals, audio recordings, and photographs. For example, the author frequently stated a specific event, such as Hitler's writing of his will, and then concluded with a testimonial of the secretary who assisted in the will writing event (Joachimthaler, 131). This utilization of a wide array and frequent use of primary sources enabled the author to get as close as possible to the actual occurrences and detail Hitler's mental status on the day of his suicide. Thus, this use of a broad spectrum of primary sources truly allowed for the reader to grasp the actual events, illness, political pressures, betrayal and the complete and utter state of chaos of Hitler and his Nazi Empire.
