When an organization is facing a crisisùregardless of whether that organization is a political organization, a private company, or a nonprofit, there are certain steps that must be taken to address the crisis and effectively manage it. The four key components of crisis management are as follows:
Prevention. Crisis can sometimes be prevented before they even occur. Organizations should undertake vulnerability audits, or multidisciplinary assessments of risk, in order to determine the current and potential strengths and weaknesses of the organization's operational structure. Vulnerability audits can often provide solutions to crises before they ever fully develop by identifying the weaknesses that can cause emergencies and crises if left unaddressed (Bernstein3).
