On 27 November 2001, the National Bureau of Economic Research declared that the United States economy has been in recession since March 2001. While this declaration may prove to be correct, it is necessary to remember that the National bureau of Economic Research applies different criteria to determine the presence of recession in the economy (Stevenson, 2001b). The National Bureau of Economic Research is not the only organization that applies different criteria to identify recessions. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) declare a recession when growth in economic output falls below 2.5 percent per annum.
