The Sebastian River Medical Center (SRMC) commenced operations in 1974. The SRMC (in Sebastian, Florida) is located near to the boundary line between Indian River County and Brevard County (Sebastian River Medical Center, 2005c). The geographical location of the SRMC places the institution in a position of being able to serve the populations of both counties. This situation creates an opportunity for the hospital to expand its service area beyond the county in which the institution is located.
The purpose that the SRMC serves in the community is enunciated clearly in the organization's mission. The mission statement of the SRMC commits the institution to "achieving the highest level of measurable quality and efficiency in the delivery of health-care services that are responsive to the needs and values of our patients, physicians, employees, and visitors" (Sebastian River Medical Center, 2005c).
