Socio-cultural, Cognitive, and Biological Factors

Polivy and Hermaná(2002) reported that causes of eating disorders are multiple and factors involved include socio-cultural factors such as media and peer influences, family factors such as enmeshment and criticism, negative affect, low self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction.á In addition, there may be cognitive and biological causes of eating disorders (Polivy & Herman,á2002). Polivy and Hermaná(2002) view eating disorders as a method of dealing with problems of identity and personal control. Strong,áWilliamson, Netemeyer, and Geer (2000) also noted that eating disorder symptoms are related to psychosocial correlates. These authors found that eating disorder symptoms are related to concerns about body size or shape.
