Martin and Romanowski (1997) reported that ADCs include any contact between a living person and one that is deceased. Different forms of ADCs include clairvoyance, clairaudience, psychokinetic activity, and synchronistic events. The ADC may include the deceased appearing in a dream or as a ghost. The deceased may be heard, felt, or smelled, or their presence may be sensed. Objects may be moved. Contact may be brief or prolonged and it may happen once only or include multiple contacts. ADCs are spontaneously but can be facilitated through prayer, medication, and belief.

Martin and Romanowski (1997) stated that people who report ADCs tend to think that they are alone in this experience and are not inclined to believe in the paranormal or supernatural. Most are reluctant to discuss this encounter but all are able to recognize the deceased loved one in the ADC. Most communications include close family members or friends that recently died and in most cases the ADC was brief. If the ADC occurs during sleep it is experienced as a dream. The deceased is in good health in nearly all instances and some predict future events. Religious background is not a factor in ADCs and all are grateful for and comforted by the experience.

Martin and Romanowski (1997) reported that the ADC results in increased understanding about life and death with positive feelings about both. While living individuals cannot fully understand life after death, ADCs remind people that their abilities are limited and there is more to comprehend than tends to be believed. Many feel they can't relate their ADC experiences since they fear ridicule or disbelief and criticism may be experienced in this sharing. It is important to have a support group or a good friend that can be trusted with the experience. Joining a community of those who have also experienced an ADC can provide this support.
