In the 1997 movie, The Edge, starring Alek Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins, the bear symbolizes nature's true power over man. The bear provides the main source of conflict in the movie. Nature is seen as the enemy of the millionaire and his employee as they struggle with hunger, cold, and a man-eating bear when their plane crashes in a remote part of the Alaskan wilderness. The bear is indifferent to the weather and satisfies its hunger by consuming one of the three survivors of the plane crash. Unlike the men, the bear has no need to make fire for heat, warmth, or protection from the elements. In the movie, the bear embodies the power and sheer force that nature has. Ironically, the men who've crashed are powerful men in the outside world who lose this power in the wilderness. They must rely on each other in order to survive. The problem is the younger man wants to older man to die.
