The comparison is made between New Yorkùblood alcohol level at which driving is illegal per se of 0.10 percent, and a population in 1989 of approximately 18.0 million, and Texasùblood alcohol level at which driving is illegal per se of 0.10 percent, and a population in 1989 of approximately 17.0 million (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1990; Bureau of the Census, 1991). The research question investigated is as follows: What demographic factors contribute to the differences in driving while under the influence of alcohol behaviors in New York and Texas? In the conduct of this research, it is assumed that the number of arrests for driving while under the influence of alcohol is representative of overall driving while under the influence of alcohol behavior.

The dependent variable in this analysis is the per capita arrest rate for the offense of driving while under the influence of alcohol. A total of 10 independent, or causal, variables are identified. These independent variables are as follows:

1. Population density. An assumption is made that driving while under the influence of alcoholic behavior is more likely in higher population density areas.
